With nearly 19 years experience teaching, Kristi Moncrief has dedicated her career to high quality teacher training in the classroom and values the difference this training makes in the lives of her students and their families. Kristi began her Certified Academic Language Therapy journey in 2015 under the direction of Nancy Coffman, and for the past 9 years she has provided direct intervention services to students ages 7 through 14. For the past 4 years she has mentored and supported teachers in the CALT training. She is now equipped as a Qualified Instructor to provide training to teachers. Kristi has her Master's degree in Teaching and Learning with a specialization in reading, is a National Board Certified Teacher, and has completed LETRs training and earned a LETRs certificate.

This two year course is designed to prepare trainees to become an ALTA Certified Academic Language Therapist with use of the Multisensory Structured Language Education curriculum, Take Flight, A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia written by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders of the Scottish Rite for Children.
Trainees will receive over 200 instructional hours and support through direct feedback as part of the 700 hours of clinical practice.
Participants will be screened based on the credentialing organization, The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) and must adhere to the course requirements including the completion and passing scores on the coursework, at least 10 demonstration lessons, and documentation of 700 clinical practice hours in order to sit for the CALT exam.
Strategies taught will be multisensory, direct, explicit, sequential, systematic, cumulative, simultaneous and analytic in order to meet the needs of each child. Other coursework includes article reviews, chapter reviews, book reports, pre and post exams, and a final project. Training materials include the instructor materials developed by the staff at Scottish Rite for Children.

In order to sit for the ALTA CALT exam:
After Trainees receive a passing score on the exam, they will submit required documents to ALTA for certification and apply for the Dyslexia Therapist Class B endorsement on the Alabama State Department of Education website to receive the $5000 stipend.
Trainees/Schools will have the option to purchase the trainee kits and must have the Intro kit purchased before Intro week 1 of training (May 1st).
Intro Kit 1: $802.23
Advanced Kit 2: $240.35
All other materials are purchased separately by the trainee or school district and will need them prior to beginning the clinical hours. A list will be provided to those interested.
Contact Kristi Moncrief for the cost of training. Invoices will be sent either quarterly or once per year.
All participants are required to attend all training sessions. If one has to miss, the participant must contact the instructor with a written explanation and get prior approval from the instructor. The participant must schedule a time to make up the instructional hours missed at the cost to the trainee.The participant must accumulate at least 200 hours of instructional hours so attendance is mandatory. If hours are not met, the course must be retaken.
